The Status of Music in Society
Although most people would generally agree that music
features in our lives few would deny that it is undervalued in society. This
essay argues that music is relevant to our society and therefore, requires
greater government funding and policies to protect its presence in education
and culture.
It is usually the case that professional musicians
find it very difficult to embark on their working lives. This should feel very
discouraging after many years of study. There are very little chances to get
regular work and therefore, the only option left is to perform in the streets
which is disheartening. This is the reason why many skilled young musicians
decide to abandon their careers.
Nonetheless, the answer to these challenges could be
met at the school. In terms of the school curriculum itself, music has been
degraded in comparison to other core subjects such as maths or languages. Yet
research has been made in support of the great advantages of students learning
music. Music boosts their creativity and teach them other language meanwhile
learning in a collaborative activity (e.g. playing all together a song with the
flute).
Considering the arguments previously mentioned the
first step to be taken would be to persuade government to increase their
funding by offering more training scholarships and maybe subsidy for those who
have not access to their first job yet. Also, to overcome this problem the
school curriculum should be revised, giving music some credit for its
unforeseen benefits by increasing teaching hours.
Os dejo también una charla TED muy interesante acerca de la relación entre imaginación, creatividad y música. Enjoy!
